As Banksy Wraps Up in NYC, Strata Is In Full Swing
October has been a crazy month here in NYC. Being a relocated Brit, it’s been great to see Banksy delivering his unique brand of “art” around the city in his month-long residency here. I’ve managed to visit a few of his installations including this one in my neighborhood on Upper West Side. Each Banksy installation was crowded and you had to line up to take a pic… But nothing like Strata, which was CRAZY busy last night! It was like being at one of those packed nightclubs as you try to walk around with your drink without spilling it on everyone around you; the only thing missing was the loud music and strobe lights.
At last year’s Strata, the exhibitors fit in just one room. In stark contrast, this year they are spread across three rooms with booths literally in the walkways between them. It is an auspicious sign of how the Hadoop ecosystem is growing and companies are embracing this new technology in a meaningful way. Happily Syncsort has a very spacious booth relative to most (though Cloudera wins the award for the most insane booth — it’s so tall it could only fit in one of the rooms with a really high ceiling!). We are giving away some cool Hadoop Hacker t-shirts, which have been popular with the Hadoop geeks — of which there are many more this year. If you are around, stop by and pick one up; you can also get details on what else we’re doing at the show here.
Syncsort also has a roving camera crew interviewing people at the show so that we can provide you with video updates. Our fearless crew navigated the massive crowds to get from one booth to another and managed to get some great interviews with the leaders from Cloudera, MapR, Pivotal, and Redhat. Check out our video below and see what they have to say about Strata, the state of Hadoop, and what’s being announced at the show that you won’t want to miss. We’ll be releasing videos throughout the event so that you can stay up-to-date, even if you’re not here.
In addition to the opening reception on the show floor, there were also some great sessions yesterday and LOTS of MeetUps and User Groups last night. We’ll be providing more info about what we heard in those sessions in upcoming posts. There is lots of buzz about the keynotes happening this morning, with anticipation of what will be unveiled. Tune back in to see what’s happening at Hadoop Central here in NYC!
